Baker’s SFG men triumph at Trevose

Memories  of the recent Ryder Cup, were rekindled as the 2010 SingleFigureGolfer Challenge Cup went down to the wire in Cornwall.

The classic links of Trevose – a popular 2-FORE!-1 venue – hosted the 3rd annual Single Figure Golfer Challenge Cup where successful Walker Cup captain Peter McEvoy’s Team SFG played a team of former Ryder Cup and Walker Cup players led by former Ryder Cup vice-captain Peter Baker.

Baker’s team consisted of six former Ryder Cup players including Philip Walton, David Gilford, Paul Way, Steve Richardson, Gordon Brand Junior and himself. The amateur team had qualified throughout the season on the Single Figure Golfer Challenge Tour, sponsored by Srixon.

Day one saw the Foursomes and Fourballs finishing 7-3 to the amateurs but, with the  Trevose greens frighteningly quick, the professional team took the final day singles 7 ½ – 2 ½ and ensured victory by a single point.

Peter Baker commenting on his victory announced: “I was delighted to be asked to captain the pros in this event. I feel this event is unique in the golfing world and one which has finally given the opportunity to good club golfers to compete in a competition which recognises their endeavours and rewards them with an experience they will never forget.

“This is not a pro-am- this is team golf with real pressure. Here’s to next year and all it brings for the successful ones.”
