Sheffield golf development continues with further investment

A leading South Yorkshire golf operator is continuing its investment in the sport across the region after plans to improve facilities at one of the top courses were given the go ahead.

Sheffield International Venues (SIV), which runs Birley Wood Golf Course, applied for permission to create a new parking area in the grounds of the course with spaces for up to 60 cars.

The development is underway and will see SIV invest around £50,000 to complete the work.

Birley Wood, which offers an 18 hole course with views of the surrounding countryside, provides golfers with a practice putting green, pro shop and food and bar facilities at the Fairways public house.

To create space for the car park improvements, some small alterations will be made to the course to ensure the course length and quality remains similar.

The ninth hole will be shortened by around 40 yards and the tee of the first hole is to be extended by around 30 yards, other tee extensions are planned. The putting green will move to the ninth green and a new ninth green will be created on the course.

Andy Carnall, SIV’s golf manager, said: “The development of Birley Wood’s golf course is an important aspect of ensuring that we offer our customers the best possible experience when using our facilities.

“This, linked with our partnership with Activity Sheffield to boost participation in the sport across the region, will provide us with an excellent platform to attract more people to this already popular golf course.”

SIV have recently teamed up with Activity Sheffield to engage people of all ages in golf coaching sessions and place them in clubs across the city.

The plans will include the creation of the Sheffield and District Golf Development Partnership, which hopes to bring SIV and Sheffield City Council together with ladies and men’s golf unions, local golf professionals associations and local schools to increase participation and retention in the sport.

SIV operates four golf courses in Sheffield and Chesterfield: Tapton Park, Beauchief, Birley Wood and Tinsley Park. They offer four 18-hole golf courses, a nine-hole course, a pitch and putt course, and have professionals based at each course on hand to provide coaching for all ages and abilities, from adults and juniors players to beginners.

SIV’s golfit membership scheme also provides members with unlimited access to four Fitness Unlimited venues – Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Concord Sports Centre, Hillsborough Leisure Centre and Don Valley Stadium.
