New driving range opens at thorpe wood

The long awaited two-tier driving range at Thorpe Wood Golf Course in Peterborough opened at the weekend.
The first ball to be fired on the driving range was struck by Roger Fitton, who ran the golf course from 1975 until 2011. Having retired last year it was felt it was fitting for Roger to return to be a part of the new era and illustrate the continuity of the Fitton family’s management of golf within the Nene Park.
Roger says of the new development, “Thorpe Wood and Orton Meadows have been the entry point into golf for many people in the Peterborough area. Golf is sometimes viewed as inaccessible and a little snobby but this has never been the case at our courses.
“The introduction of a driving range means that we will be able to provide a great facility for anyone wanting to try the sport as well as offering a professional coaching and practice venue for experienced golfers making it truly open to all.”
The driving range provides the perfect place to practice your swing ahead of tackling Thorpe Wood’s challenging 18 hole golf course which sits 2 miles to the west of Peterborough City centre. There is also a large golf shop, clubhouse and Greene King public house on site to offer a complete day out for golfers.
Director of Golf at Nene Park Golf, Simon Fitton, said, “We are delighted that we can offer Peterborough’s golfing community a facility to use and be proud of. It is a quality modern golf range and is unusual because of its two-tier design.
“We are delighted with the feedback and excitement that visitors have shown watching it being built and cannot wait for it to be open. I would encourage everybody with an interest in the sport to come and hone their skills at the new range and if you’ve never thought about golf then come and give it a go.
“We aim to be the hub of golf in the area so people will be able to come here and increase participation in golf. The game in the whole area will get a lift and we are delighted with the support from the County Partnership.”
