2-FORE!-1 best of britain: East Lothian

East Lothian is the proud home of some of the best golf in Scotland and is just a 30mins drive from the capital Edinburgh. Here are some of the best 2-FORE!-1 tracks on offer…

* Musselburgh Links Old Course – Forget St Andrews, this is where golf first started: it’s officially recognised as the oldest golf course in the world – the game was played on Musselburgh Links as early as 1672 although Mary Queen of Scots reputedly played there in 1567.T

The magical, mystical nine-hole links has staged six Open Championships and quite rightly proudly claims to be the ‘Cradle of Golf.’

The uniquely historic Old Course is ploted within the town’s equally popular race course and dramatically opens with a demanding 240-yards par-3 to a raised, well guarded green!

* The Glen – superb clifftop on the outskirts of North Berwick. Enjoys superb views across the Firth of Forth and many of its holes hug the coastline or play down towards it, with Bass Rock – the east coast’s version of Ailsa Craig and home to the world’s largest gannet colonies  (21,000 pairs) – always in the background.

* Whitekirk – classy rolling heathland layout just outside North Berwick with a seriously tough opening stretch. Fantastic clubhouse facilities too.

* Haddington – splendid mature parkland within the boundaries of a former country estate. The course is set in peaceful walled surroundings with the River Tyne on its North Boundary.

* Liberton – rolling parkland course in the south east of Edinburgh. The fairways are tight and the greens are relatively small but well guarded.

* West Linton – this 120-years-old municipal moorland course can be found on Slipperfield Moor and boasts wonderful views of the Scottish border country.
