Top Borders venue undergoes major refurb

Country house gem, the Roxburghe Hotel and Golf Course in Kelso, Scotland, part of has undergone a major transformation of its public rooms by London interior designers, Leveson Design.

A popular retreat for golf amateurs and professionals teeing off on the Roxburghe Championship Golf Course, the hotel has been brought up to date while retaining the much loved country house charm.

From the bespoke carpet woven in the family tartan to the Isle of Bute tweed-covered chairs and sofas, the refurbishment has focused on classic comfort and style.

Using a mix of existing Roxburghe owned antiques and additional rugs and antique furniture, Cindy Leveson has created a homely and comfortable feel.  The colours and tones used within the refurbishment echo the outdoors and bring the earthy tones of the estate into the rooms themselves.

The blue and brown tones of the Kerr family tartan carpet are echoed throughout the new colour scheme and complement the natural tones of the Victorian wooden staircase and doors.  In each room, the use of colour brings them to life, such as the accents of raspberry and sky blue in the drawing room and deep teal wallpaper in the dining room with its views across the lawns.

Designed by Dave Thomas in 1995 and now established as one of the top inland courses in Scotland, the Championship Course was home to the Scottish Seniors Open for five years. It is a member of 2-FORE!-1 and offers half-price green fees with a 2-FORE!-1 voucher.

Described by Sam Torrance as “a beautiful hole in a glorious setting”, the signature hole is the 14th, a 585-yard par five known as ‘The Viaduct’. The course was selected to host the prestigious 2008 Amateur Boys and it will host the First Stage of the European Tour Qualifying School in September this year.

General Manager, Duncan Evans said: “Guests at the Roxburghe love to fall into our comfortable sofas, relax and enjoy the views, or just have a dram by the fire after playing a round on the golf course.  This refurbishment is both an investment in our guests’ ongoing comfort and in the future of the hotel itself – bringing us up to date while retaining our own well-loved style.”

With 22 bedrooms and the full range of sporting pursuits on the Roxburghe Estate in addition to a championship golf course, this unique hotel offers a getaway destination little more than an hour’s drive from both Edinburgh and Newcastle.

The bedrooms, many of which feature four poster beds and some with log fires, offer a homely yet aristocratic retreat coupled with award winning dining, roaring fires and some special wines selected by the Duke from the cellars of nearby Floors Castle.
