*The Players Club, Bristol – You’re guaranteed a round to remember at The Players Club but you need tio turn up with your A game. The brash Bristol layout is the ultimate in golfing challenges – it’s ultra-long and strewn with hazards, most of the water variety.
Actually, it’s just over a marathon 7,600 yards off the back tees, making it the longest course in the country. Water features come thick and fast too with the par-4 3rd involving a double carry over a large lake.
*Shanklin & Sandown, Isle of Wight – A splendid heathland course with fine views, specially from the breathtaking elevated tee at the stroke index 1 par-4 13th.
Shanklin’s par-3s are pretty special too with the 143 yards 5th being an absolute stunner with the 9th and its three-tier green not too far behind.
*Stinchcombe Hill, Glos – This short but highly challenging track is 700ft above sea level and is spectacularly set on the southern edge of the Cotswold Escarpment above the Severn Valley.
*Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria – Set between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, Kirkby Lonsdale offers natural undulating terrain, dramatic views and a great combination of holes.
*Celtic Manor, Monmouthshire, Wales – The home of the 2010 Ryder Cup boasts a trio of outstanding 18 hole courses and both the excellent Roman Road, designed by Robert Trent Jones, and Montgomerie are available in 2-FORE!-1.
*Westerwood Hotel, Dunbartonshire, Scotland – A cracking par-72 undulating parkland track created by Seve Ballesteros and Dave Thomas.
