Seeking a memorable 2-FORE!-1 venue and round of golf? Look no further: take your pick from this week’s ‘Six of the Best’ 2-FORE!-1 layouts – all capable of more than meeting your 2-FORE!-1 needs and expectations.
*Nizels, Kent – Has been entertaining golfers from near and far since opening over a decade ago and is plotted on high ground overlooking Kentish Weald countryside within an historical estate that dates back to 1397.
*Selsdon Park, Surrey – Just 12 miles from the centre of London yet can be found in a serene setting of 250 acres of spectacular rolling parkland, the 18-hole championship course shares star billing with a luxury hotel housed in a neo-Jacobean building.
*Fortrose & Rosemarkie, Scottish Highlands – The handiwork of James Braid, this is a short but magical Highlands links exquisitely plotted on the narrow Chanonry peninsula.
*Okehampton, Devon – Classy parkland with great greens set out as a J.H. Taylor nine holer in 1913 but became a ‘full’ course a decade later. Plotted on undulating ground, the course plays like a parkland although it actually sits on moorland. Several interesting holes will capture the imagination – not least the 12th at a mere 94 yards. But it can be devilishly deceptive if the wind is blowing and you should be aware that the West Okement river awaits to the left and behind the green.
*Leighton Buzzard, Beds – Splendid compact course offering a good mixture of woodland and heathland holes. It’s not the longest track with two par-4s measuring less than 255 yards. But with pines, birch, beech and oak trees lining most of the fairways, it provides a stern examination.
*Borth and Ynyslas, Wales – A beautiful out-and-back traditional links that overlooks Cardigan Bay on the estuary of the Dovey River. With the potential to set tighter pin positions on the small and often fast greens, it’s not a straightforward round in windy conditions.
