The Ryder Cup is winging its way to Essex

Golf’s most prestigious team trophy, the Ryder Cup, will be in Essex next Monday (Aug 12) when it visits Channels Golf Club, in Little Waltham, Chelmsford.
The trophy, which dates back to the very first contest between the USA and Great Britain in 1927 at Worcester Country Club, Massachusetts, will be on display for the president’s pro-am competition and visitors to the club will have the opportunity to have their picture taken alongside it.
Now contested biennially between USA and Europe, the Ryder Cup is regarded as the world’s third biggest televised sporting event behind the Olympics and football’s World Cup. And officials at the club are thrilled to be able to show off the legendary trophy in their stunning 14th-century clubhouse.
Director Sara Stubbings-Larner said: “It is a real honour for us to have the Ryder Cup for the day. President’s Day is always a popular event here at Channels and the presence of such an instantly recognisable, iconic sporting trophy will add to the buzz around the club.”
The Ryder Cup will arrive at midday just in time for the draw for the day’s event, which will see teams of four – one member, two guests and one east region PGA pro – compete for a trophy donated by the Stubbings family, owners of the club.
It will remain at the club throughout the day’s events and non-members and non-participants are more than welcome to visit the club to see the trophy, which was last held aloft by Spain’s European team captain José María Olazábal, after last year’s Miracle at Medinah.
Channels Golf Club sits on the undulating 300-acre Cliffords Estate just to the north of Chelmsford and offers beautiful views of the Essex countryside. It has an exquisite 14th century clubhouse, which incorporates the Brasserie restaurant and two private dining /meeting rooms, and offers stunning views of the golf course, a mature tree-lined avenue and 20ft fountain.
