Portal preparing to host British pro championship

Popular 2-FORE!-1 venue Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf and Spa, Cheshire, will welcome up to 120 professionals from all over the UK to its Championship course for the one day British Professionals Championship on May 20th.

“This is the first time the tournament has ever been held at a resort like Portal and we are extremely excited to have the opportunity to host such a special event,” said Stuart Leech, Golf Manager at the Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf and Spa.

Stuart, who has spent more than 20 years working at golf courses all over the country, was instrumental in bringing the event to Portal after competing in the tournament last year.

“I played in the event last year and could see the potential in moving it forward and playing it on a really fantastic course,” said Stuart.

”We want to create a real tour-like feel and leave a lasting impression on all the professionals that are taking part to really put Portal on the map.”

The tournament, which is now in its fourth year, is open to all golf professionals in the UK and attracts a number of former tour players, including three times European Tour winner Peter Baker.

It also acts as a qualifier for the prestigious Ashworth Cup Competition, to be held at the Celtic Manor Resort at the end of July.

Stuart added: “Not only are players competing for the professional’s championship but also the chance to play in the Ashworth Cup too, which really adds to the occasion.”

Designed by world renowned architect Donald Steel the Championship course at Portal boasts USGA-spec greens and tests golfers of all abilities.

Expansive water hazards and cascading waterfalls are among the many tests, including the unique island par 3 14th hole.

Practice ranges and buggies will be available to all competing golfers in the run up the event and on the day.

Accommodation packages are also available to book now. For more information visit: www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/Portal_Hotel
