2-FORE!-1 best of britain: Shropshire

This regular 2-FORE!-1 feature continues with a close look at Shropshire’s 2-FORE!-1 finest….

*Patshull Park Hotel, G&CC, Wolverhampton – Impressive all-round venue with a John Jacobs-designed parkland course supported by a three star hotel and good facilities.

*Church Stretton, near Shrewsbury – One word that could never be used to describe the oldest 18-hole layout in Shropshire is boring. With designers like James Braid, Harry Vardon, and J.H. Taylor all having a hand in its construction, this par 66 is one of the most challenging and beautiful courses around. The fact that it’s just over 5,000 yards gives a slightly false impression because several greens are raised or built into the side of a hill. Accuracy is therefore vital, specially on the opening hole and you’re looking to hit a green protected by a bank and out-of-bounds.

*Telford Golf & Spa Hotel – Home of a fast maturing parkland course backed-up by a four star on-site hotel. A great spot to stay and play!

*Market Drayton GC – This classy undulating parkland course has been testing golfers since 1906 and provides spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

*Cleobury Mortimer, Kidderminster – Offers 27 holes of top parkland golf and barely a weak one among them. It drains well too so is in good shape throughout the year.

*Hawkstone Park – Another outstanding stay and play venue, Hawkstone is where former Open and Masters winner Sandy Lyle learnt to play the game and the good news is that the venue’s Championship Course belongs to 2-FORE!-1.
