Another superb half-dozen 2-FORE!-1 courses where you’re guaranteed a round to remember…
*Turnberry (Kintyre course), Ayrshire – It may play second fiddle to the mighty, magnificent Ailsa but the Kintyre is a genuine championship back-up to the superstar and was selected as a Qualifying venue for the 2004 Open at nearby Royal Troon.
But don’t think for one second the Kintyre is easier than the Ailsa because it isn’t. Believe that and you’ll be severely punished, particularly if you’re wayward off the tee – swathes of gorse bushes line the tight but fast-running fairways.
*Lytham Green Drive, Lancs – Living in the shadow of the illustrious Royal Lytham Open Championship venue, this Blackpool track misses out on the credit it would surely receive in other parts of the country.
It’s an intriguing parkland challenge – water comes into play on at least six holes while bunkers play a vital role in protecting the par-3s.
*Nizels, Kent – Has been entertaining golfers from near and far since opening just over a decade ago and is plotted on high ground overlooking Kentish Weald countryside.within an historical estate that dates back to 1397.
*Selsdon Park, Surrey – Just 12 miles from the centre of London yet can be found in a serene setting of 250 acres of spectacular rolling parkland, the 18-hole championship course shares star billing with a luxury hotel housed in a neo-Jacobean building.
Malahide, near Dublin – Close to the famous links of Portmarnock and is a great inland alternative to one of Ireland’s most revered layouts.
Situated in North County Dublin and a short drive from the capital, it provides 27 holes (three loops of nine) of quality, gently undulating parkland initially the work of the late great Eddie Hackett.
*Bingley St Ives, West Yorks – A terrific course with a bit everything – parkland, woodland and moorland golf – and bags of pedigree.
