Camberley Heath’s charity event is a huge hit

Proud Camberley Heath centenary captain Richard Broderick recently hosted a successful recent Charity Day to significantly boost the funds for Help for Heroes and the Lt Dougie Dalzell MC Memorial Trust.

Lt Dougie Dalzell served in the Coldstream Guards and on the 18th February 2010, on his 27th birthday, tragically lost his life in Afghanistan as a result of an IED explosion. The Trust was set up to assist those who are currently serving or have served in the Armed Forces to improve the quality of life of soldiers who have given so much for their country.

On the day 18 teams participated in the charity event at the Surrey course (pictured), including a team from the Coldstream Guards and one from Help for Heroes. Louis Smit and Adam Cocks played in the Help for Heroes team; Louis was injured during a grenade attack in Afghanistan and relies on an artificial leg to get around. He is a regular golfer with a handicap of 20.

Eighteen handicapper Adam was injured when his vehicle was hit by an IED (twice in about twenty minutes) and although he has all his limbs, he has had a serious amount of surgery.

Both Louis and Adam have represented the UK in a Ryder Cup style competition for injured solders in the USA and enjoyed great success.

Lt Col Tristan Crew MBE, who is currently the Clinical Development Officer at Headley Court, founded the military initiative BattleBack Golf which looks to introduce wounded service men and women into golf and at present there are more than 120 golfers registered with the programme and this number is increasing.

Only last week Tristan received the MBE for his distinguished service as Executive Officer at Headley Court. He was also a member of the Help for Heroes team on the day.

Overall the day was a fantastic success and to add to the occasion, two Guardsmen from the Coldstream Guards were in attendance dressed in formal uniform. All the teams played an enjoyable round with everyone raving about the course over dinner. The winners of the day were a team from Shepherd and Neame, Britain’s oldest brewery and suppliers to Camberley Heath.

Overall £7,000 was raised for both charities.

Camberley Captain Richard Broderick thanked everyone who took part and for their kind generosity in supporting the day with special mention going to main sponsors Gordon Young of Eastbrook International Consultants and David Vertannes of Orchard Estate Agents.
