Club secures funding to attract non-golfers to sport

Gaudet Luce Golf Club near Droitwich has secured funding for a national programme aimed at attracting more people to the sport.

The club is aiming to encourage more people to the club to try the game through the county-wide Get Into Golf initiative.

As part of the programme, the family-owned club, which opened its doors in 1995, has launched a five-week programme of one-hour coaching sessions which are fronted by club professional and specialised coach, Russell Adams.

The club’s owners are also keen to encourage women and children to pick up a club at the 27-hole Hadzor facility through the sessions which include a free introductory golf lesson for people aged 14 and over.

The club’s operations director Alec Fernihough is hoping the initiative will encourage 100 new players to tee off at Gaudet Luce by March next year. He said: “To secure funding which allows us to run the programme of coaching sessions is fantastic. I am delighted as ultimately it will help encourage more people, young and old, who are interested in learning more about the game to come along and pick up a club.

“Everyone is welcome to join the programme and we are especially keen to get women and children involved in the lessons which Russell has designed to be great fun. We are also taking the worry out of buying new equipment, such as golf clubs and balls, for first-time golfers by providing everything they would need to take part in the lessons. It couldn’t be easier and I hope that helps in our drive to get 100 more local people interested in golf.”

The major aim of the Get Into Golf programme, which funded by the Worcester County Golf Partnership, aims to get more people into the sport so they can keep fit, combat stress and stay in shape.

Fernihough added: “We recognise how important it is to get more people active and the Get Into Golf initiative is playing a big role, not just here at Gaudet Luce, but across Worcestershire. I hope in the coming weeks more and more people see that playing golf is a great way of exercising and socialising.”
