De Vere Slaley Hall witnesses thrilling climax to PGA Cup

Team USA narrowly retained the PGA Cup despite a valiant Sunday singles fightback from GB&I at De Vere Slaley Hall in one of the most exciting matches in the event’s history.

The America’s retained the Llandudno Trophy in dramatic fashion after a 13-13 tie, following three days of intense competition.

The British and Irish team were trailing by five points heading into the Sunday singles matches, but dominated the final day, winning 7.5 – 2.5, but unfortunately fell just short of the victory mark.

The 7,063 par-72 Hunting course at De Vere Slaley Hall received high praise for its layout and conditioning from members of both teams throughout the week, and provided the perfect setting for the closely-fought matches.

US Team Captain, Allen Wronowski, paid tribute saying: “Slaley Hall and the Hunting course will certainly be remembered as one of our finest host sites of the PGA Cup. The golf course conditions set up for a wonderful championship test, hard, but fair. The hotel and staff provided an incredible experience for all of the contestants, official parties and staff.”

Keith Pickard, Regional Golf Director at De Vere commented on a successful week, adding: “We had been looking forward to this week ever since it was announced that Slaley Hall would be hosting these matches, and we couldn’t really have asked for things to have gone much better. Steve Cram and his team of greenkeepers once again did a fantastic job in preparing the golf course to the highest of standards, and it provided the perfect setting to one of the most exciting matches in history.”

The selection of Slaley Hall as host venue for these historic matches just continues to underline De Vere’s expansive partnership with the PGA, with a number of its key tournaments being played across the group’s portfolio of resorts, including the PGA Senior Championship which was held at Slaley Hall for five consecutive years, and was this year held at De Vere Mottram Hall in Cheshire.
