Tenerife: a magical year-round golfing destination

Tenerife is a golfing paradise island, offering a variety of courses and outstanding year-round golf.

Its best known for being an outstanding winter golfing hotspot but it’s pretty special in summer time too: average summer temperatures of 23°C provide the ideal climate to enjoy a relaxing golf break thanks to cooling trade winds. Furthermore, golf and hotel rates are generally 20 per cent cheaper than in winter time!

Tenerife is known as ‘the island of eternal spring’ due to its excellent warm temperatures, making it the perfect place to play golf 12 months a year.

Travel expert Sean Noble of the Azalea Group says: “For years, people have been visiting Tenerife in the winter from the UK.

“This has helped its popularity as a winter golfing destination grow but with longer days, courses that are in perfect condition, great temperatures, incredible flight access and rates that are significantly lower in winter season, Tenerife has everything needed for the ideal summer golfing break.”

Altogether the largest of the Canary islands features nine different and varied layouts: Buenavista in the west, the historic Real Club de Golf de Tenerife (2nd oldest club in Spain) in the north and Golf Costa Adeje, Abama, Las Americas, Golf del Sur, Amarilla, and fun nine holer Los Palos in the south.

In addition, the breathtaking Donald Steel-designed Tecina is a 40mins ferry ride on the stunning island of La Gomera – a magical adventure well worth experiencing, specially if you’re staying at the nearby Hotel Jardin Tecina dramatically overlooking the coast.

This is a big year for golf on the island with Tenerife Golf hosting notable amateur and professional golf events including the Ladies’ Spanish Open at Golf Costa Adeje between September 18-21.

Tenerife ‘must plays’ include Abama and Buenavista which both happen to be luxury resorts at opposite ends of the island. The undulating former is in immaculate condition and boasts lighting quick, Augusta-esque sloping greens. Buenavista will similarly take your breath away – a masterpiece of a Seve Ballesteros layout between the mountains and sea and just as spectacular as Pebble Beach and Turnberry.

Back in the south, Golf del Sur (27 holes) and Amarilla, another Steel design, are well worth playing as are both Costa Adeje and Golf Las Americas which provide excellent holiday golf as well as being in great condition when we visited at the end of a long, busy winter. They also happen to be at the hub of the chief off-course action on offer in the popular resorts of Las Americas and Los Cristianos.

Tenerife, majestically overlooked by Mount Teide, is in the running to host next year’s International Golf Travel Market and we reckon it would make the perfect venue…
