2-FORE!-1 Six of the Best

This week’s top 2-FORE!-1 Golf choices include some coastal classics and the only UK course designed by legendary Spaniard Seve Ballesteros plus one of Ireland’s most scenic layouts.

*The Glen, East Lothian, Scotland – Known locally as North Berwick’s East Links, often gets overlooked for the prestigious links of the neighbouring West Links, Muirfield, and Archerfield just down the coast. But not even these superstars can compete with The Glen which offers some of the best clifftop golf around with several holes on the back nine spectacularly running along – and overlooking – the sea.

*Tehidy Park, Cornwall – Cornwall boasts some of the best links courses around but Tehidy is arguably one of the county’s leading inland tracks. Although only two miles from the sea, this parkland venue has a mix of open holes, some with strategically-placed streams but many featuring tree-lined fairways.

*The Belfry (PGA National), West Midlands – Like its more famous, Ryder Cup-staging Brabazon neighbour, the PGA National offers a great challenge you take on the slick fairways, cavernous bunkers and quick greens.

*Ring of Kerry, Co. Kerry, Ireland – Eddie Hackett laid out this scenic course in Co Kerry, perched on the hills overlooking Kenmare Bay and Kerry Mountains. Star hole is the 233-yard par-3 13th played from an elevated tee to a sloping, water guarded green.

*The Shire (pictured), Herts – The late great Seve’s only UK legacy in course design is here on a once boring piece of farmland in North London. Ballesteros has created a spectacular layout with water features aplenty, including a Sawgrass replica.

*Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales – On the short side but James Braid’s 1912 layout still provides great heathland golf – the fairways are tight and undulating – with awesome coastal views.
