Herts club to step back in time

Chorleywood GC, the oldest club in Hertfordshire, is staging an event with a difference – its inaugural Hickory Golf competition – on Friday May 30th.

Located just five minutes from junction 18 of the M25, this lovely gently rolling nine-hole course (founded 1890) is perfect for this type of event which provides a great opportunity to play a round with the clubs used from the early 1900s.

Said a club official: “Those taking part can compare their performance with the present day equipment – you may well be amazed at how well you play. Certainly it’s a wonderful experience, but is also a great day’s golf.”

There will be a Texas Scramble format in teams of four, which takes the pressure off individual players. Every player is provided with a set of six hickory clubs in a vintage-style light carry bag, plus a sleeve of balls suitable for hickory golf.

Every club is an original and renovated to an exceptional standard – and don’t worry about accidental damage, although unlikely, it is not the players responsibility. Each set reflects what was typical in that era, and comprises one wood, four irons and a putter.

There will be a maximum of ten teams, with great prizes for the top three teams, longest drive and nearest the pin.

The entry fee of £60 per head includes green fee, use of the clubs, sleeve of balls, bacon roll and coffee on arrival, and a two-course meal and prizegiving in the clubhouse following the event. Arrive around noon for a 1pm shotgun start.
