Video review: Nike VR fairway wood

Nike have taken head adjustability to a whole new level with the launch of their new Victory Red (VR) fairway wood.

Featuring STR8-Fit technology, the head can be set in any one of 32 different positions to promote different shot shapes.

But the technology doesn’t end there. The VR fairway woods also feature Nike’s red compression channel in the sole, positioned just behind the 455 ultra-thin steel face. This is designed to ensure uniform compression across the entire face for hotter and more consistent distances even when the ball isn’t struck out the sweet spot.

The head shape of the VR fairway wood is round and very traditional. It is also extremely compact which is exactly what the better player is looking for.

This compact profile, smooth sole and mid-shallow face allows better players to nip the ball off tight and uneven lies and shape their shots.

“Our athletes prefer a smooth sole design for optimised playability on tight fairway lies,” said Tom Stites, director of club creation for Nike Golf.  “In order to achieve that, we split the compression channel on the sole to provide improved performance from every lie.”

The centre of gravity has also been positioned slightly further forward to suit a higher swing speed and produce a more penetrating trajectory.

Loft Options:  3+ (RH) 3; (RH/LH); 4 (RH); 5 (RH/LH); All available in:  S, R. RRP £200

The VR fairway woods aren’t available in shops until February 1, 2010 but Today’s Golfer got a sneek preview and equipment editor David Connor and instruction editor Joel Tadman took them out on the range to try them out.
