Equipment changes for Callaway players at US PGA

The news from the Tour truck at Whistling Straits this week for the US PGA Championship is that a number of Callaway staff players have made some changes to their equipment in preparation for the last Major of the year.

Chief among them is world No2 Phil Mickelson who has had a full inch taken off the length of shaft in his FT Tour driver. His search for greater accuracy off the tee has seen him put a 44inch Diamana Blueboard 93-gram shaft in his big dog.

However, Graeme McDowell and Oli Wilson have both went in the opposite direction and added length to their drivers as they seek more distance off the tee on the windswept 7,500 yard course.

US Open Champ McDowell only put the FT Tour in play last week at Firestone but saw an immediate pay-off with almost 70% of fairways hitĀ (T7) and an average of 303 yards off the teeĀ (ranked 22nd).

Ernie Els has also put a slightly heavier shaft in his X-Tour 3-wood to improve his rythm while long-drive merchant Alvaro Quiros has gone back to a previous shaft.
