Tiger Woods using new putter and irons

It wasn’t just a new swing Tiger Woods was sporting as he looked back to his best at the Chevron World Challenge – it was some new golf clubs too.

The world number two put the new Nike VR Pro irons and the Nike Method 003 putter in the bag for the first time in competition and it nearly paid dividends as he missed out on his first title in over a year in a play-off with Graeme McDowell.

Woods looked to be swinging with much more confidence as he posted three opening rounds in the 60s. But gear enthusiasts will have been just as interested to spy his choice of clubs as his new swing.

It is no great surprise to see him put the Nike VR Pro blades straight in the bag as he has been instrumental in their design but the Nike Method 003 is a real break for tradition for Woods.

He has used an Anser-style blade for his entire pro career and the only time he had ever changed his putter was to put a similar-looking Method 001 in the bag for the Open Championship in July.

However, the Method 003 is a mid-mallet putter designed to be easier to align and offer a little more perimeter weighting than a traditional blade.

The Method 003 actually won the 2010 Today’s Golfer putters test – but rumours about Woods having put it in the bag after reading the review are as yet unconfirmed!
