What Gear Focus: Mizuno MX-300 irons

No-one does irons like Mizuno according to Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros and that’s particularly true of the new MX-300 irons, as featured in our exclusive What Gear 2010 section in association with online golf.

The MX-300 are probably Mizuno’s proudest creation to date because, more than any other range they have launched they combine the playability of an MP iron with the forgiveness expected in an MX club.

The irons are grain flow forged like Mizuno’s better-player clubs to provide enhanced feel and the head is packaged in a compact and neat shape that won’t put traditionalists off.

However, Mizuno have also been able to retain the forgiveness the MX irons are renowned for thanks to the cavity back and low centre of gravity.

The key is the “Y” tune pad on the rear of the club head which enhances feel and flight control. In addition, 3-7 irons feature a pocket cavity for a high launch while 8-PW utilises a solid power bar for more workability.

David Llewellyn, R&D manager at Mizuno, said: “The MX-300 will be great for solid ball strikers who are accustomed to the forgiveness of a cavity but but want a step up in feel and shotmaking.

“For good ball strikers offset often does the opposite of its intended effect – keeping the ball low rather than generating a higher flight. It also puts the COG way back from the shaft axis meaning the club takes a bit too much control over where the ball heads.

“The MX-300’s short compact profile and re-configured Y-tune Pro gives an MP level feel in a head that will be popular on tour but will still work for lots of amateur players.”
