What Gear focus: Nike Method putter

Since its launch as a prototype on tour last year Nike’s new METHOD putter, as featured in our exclusive What Gear 2010 section in association with online golf, has proven itself to be arguably the most successful putter in golf.
Already in its short lifespan it has won two major championships and a number of PGA Tour titles in the hands of Nike staff players Lucas Glover, Stewart Cink and Paul Casey.
In fact, earlier this year on the PGA Tour, the METHOD helped Casey jump from T29th in the putting stats to T9th – a major factor in his early season form before a rib injury forced him to take a break.
The design incorporates polymetal groove technology after Nike designers experimented with combinations of steel and polymer. The result is a groove system which is designed to impart more top spin on the golf ball at impact to get it rolling quicker rather than skidding across the green.
This has the effect of both keeping the ball on line and aiding distance control on putts.
Casey, who was the first player to win with the Nike METHOD this year after putting it in his bag last Autumn, added: “I fell in love with this putter the first time I putted with it.
“You can really feel the difference in how the ball comes off of the face and you can see the difference in how it rolls. It’s really helped me with my confidence on the greens.”
