Open Champion Darren Clarke picks up £2m Dunlop cheque

New Open champion Darren Clarke picked up a handy little bonus in addition to the Claret Jug after winning at Royal St Georges – a £2m cheque from clothing sponsors Dunlop.

The Northern Irishman, and world-number two Lee Westwood, had been on a no-win-no-pay deal with the sporting company which meant neither wouldn’t receive a penny until they won a Major Championship.

With Westwood’s performance in recent Majors it looked as though he would be the one to cash in first and many observers believed Dunlop’s money would be safe with Clarke sliding down the world rankings.

But his stunning performance in Kent – where he won by three shots from US pair Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson wearing a Dunlop Collection shirt – has seen him earn the substantial bonus on top of the £900,000 winners cheque from the R&A.

Dunlop officially congratulated Clarke today at a special ceremony at Lillywhite’s store, London where he also received his bonus cheque for £2 million.

Sunny Singh, head of sports marketing for Dunlop said: “Our long standing sponsorship deal with Darren Clarke is one we are very proud of and we are delighted that Darren, one of the world’s most popular golfers, has won his first major title! Our congratulations go out to Darren and his entire team.”

It has not yet been confirmed if Clarke’s relationship with Dunlop will continue after his first Major Championship success.
