Rory McIlroy claimed an astonishing third win in four starts after he shot a closing 67 to win the BMW Championship by two-shots from Lee Westwood.
The Northern Irishman had started the final round in the penultimate group, playing with Westwood behind the final pairing of Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson. But he continued his fine form to storm through the field - he is now 40-under in the last two weeks - and claim his sixth PGA Tour title.
McIlroy said: "I'm just playing with a lot of confidence right now. I’m confident in my ability and confident with the shots that I’m hitting and confident on the greens. It’s a nice run to be on, and I want to try to keep it going for as long as possible.”
The BMW Championship leaderboard also bodes well for this month's Ryder Cup, after four of Sunday’s first five finishers and six of the top nine are set to represent the United States or Europe in the biennial event at Medinah Country Club. Aside from McIlroy, there was Westwood (T2), Mickelson (T2), Tiger Woods (T4), Dustin Johnson (T6) and Jim Furyk (9), who validated his choice as a captain’s pick by closing with a four-under 68.
At the head of the leaderboard it was one of most exciting events in recent history; five players held at least a share of the final-round lead: McIlroy, Singh, Mickelson, Westwood and Johnson.
The win helped McIlroy build-up over a 3,000 point lead in the Fed-Ex Cup standings, but after the points are reset for the finale, he will still need a strong finish to hold of competitors like Tiger Woods, Brandt Snedeker and Nick Watney.
