Stephen Gallacher In The Bag: Dubai Desert Classic Winning Clubs

Stephen Gallacher sealed his first European Tour win in 201 starts with a three shot victory at the Dubai Desert Classic.

The Scot, who last won in 2004 at the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland, made an eagle at the 16th during his one-under-par final round of 71 to move clear of his closest challenger, South African Richard Sterne.

Chile’s Felipe Aguilar and Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen came third on 17-under-par, with England’s Lee Westwood and Australia’s Marcus Fraser on 16-under.

Gallacher said: “I didn’t realise it is 201 tournaments since my last victory, but now I have got it, it is even sweeter.”

The win had looked in doubt early on, when he bogeyed the opening two holes, moving Sterne into a share of the lead. But the South African dropped four shots in six holes from the 11th to 16th and when Gallacher holed out from 120-yards on 16, it led to him lifting the trophy.

His victory moves his world ranking from 111 to 60, which qualifies him for the WGC-Accenture Matchplay Championship and a good performance there could secure him a berth at The Masters in April.

“That would be something,” said Gallacher. “The Masters is the only Major I haven’t played and I have always watched it on TV. But this win certainly changes my schedule and I am very happy about that.”
