K.J. Choi Buys Irons From Golf Store For Memorial Tournament

PGA Tour pros don’t often buy clubs off the shelves, but with no on-site tour trucks allowed at this week’s Memorial Tournament, eight-time winner K.J. Choi had no choice but to go shopping when he needed a new set of irons.

The South Korean ended up buying a set of off-the-rack Mizuno MP-64’s, and has been using them since on the range and on the course in preparation for the prestigious event.

Choi, who has so far earned $661,886 in 2013, tested four different sets at the retail store before purchasing the MP-64′s with the company’s stock grips and stock True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 shafts.

“He tried a few different Mizuno irons, the MP-59′s, MP-69′s and MP-64′s,” Doug Fleischmann, a players assistant at Golf Galaxy, told Golf WRX. “He also tried the Titleist 712 CB’s.”

According the Fleishmann, Choi went into a hitting bay at the store and hit each club about five to 10 times, before asking store employees to check the swing weights and lies on the clubs.

He settled on the MP-64’s, the same irons used by Luke Donald, and tees off tomorrow in with Michael Thompson and Mike Weir.
