The inside line on Mizuno’s JPX850 driver on sale now

Mizuno pioneered sliding weight technology in drivers back in 2007 to alter a driver’s draw/fade tendency. Other companies followed, but Mizuno has now evolved the idea so you can customise spin rates, launch angle and shot shape in the new JPX 850, which goes on sale this week along with accompanying fairway woods and hybrids with Shockwave sole technology.

It uses two 8-gram weights, which can be positioned either in a central sliding rail, two lateral slots, or a combination of both. There are 10 settings in all, covering a host of swing characteristics (three are illustrated below). The adjustability doesn’t stop there as loft can also be altered via Mizuno’s Quick Switch shaft release system, ranging from 7.5° to 11.5°. “The genius of the new Fast Track is that it adds the dimension of launch angle and spin rate,” said Chuck Couch, VP Product Management. “Now we’re truly in control of maximising all aspects of golfers’ ball flight.”

The compact, bright blue 440cc head utilises a “Hot Metal” clubface to maximise balls speeds, especially on off-centre hits. Putting one of the 8g weights in the central rail away from the face adds spin; moving it closer to the face takes it away. A new “Rebound Crown” increases rigidity and saves weight, which is positioned elsewhere to help lower the club’s centre of gravity to enhance launch and spin. Adjustable fairway woods and fixed hybrids feature “Shockwave” sole technology, which looks something like a wave and allows the whole clubhead to contract then expand upon impact.
