Rory goes spikeless with new Nike Lunar Control Vapor shoes

Spikeless golf shoes have been around for a few years, but some of the very top players in the game have been slow to adopt the extra comfort they can offer. Nike are always keen to lead innovation. So they've worked very closely with Rory McIlroy to develop the new spikeless Lunar Control Vapor’s, and to ensure maximum traction they’ve got soles inspired by a snowmobile.

Nike say Rory escaped to the Bahamas for five days in mid-August to put the shoes through their paces and he took the opportunity to hit shots from all possible angles — side-hill, down-hill lies, bunkers and more to push the limit of the shoe.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve played golf in spiked footwear, and up until two years ago those spikes were metal,” McIlroy recalls. “Through its drive to innovate and bring the sport to new places, Nike has created a new traction system that provides me with a stable base to push off the ground and deliver the distance I need off the tee.”

The new sole traction system, which was first introduced on the Flyknit Elite, decouples the heel and forefoot area to help propel the athlete through the swing. Articulated channels through the sole also allow for better balance while keeping the golfer lower to the ground. A unique tread has a series of tooth-like tracks allowing for more points of ground contact for maximum traction that continuously engage with the ground as weight shifts from heel to toe. Meaning the sole is effective from all lies on the golf course as well as performing in bunkers and being much more green friendly.

The new traction system is married to a full-length Lunarlon midsole and Nike Flywire tech. Combined these elements help keep the foot stable, and cushioned, throughout the swing. A lightweight premium microfiber upper is guaranteed to keep your feet dry for 2 years.

Four-time major winner McIlroy will debut the new Vapor’s at the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament in China. You can expect to see them arriving in the UK from March 3rd 2017, RRP £120.
