Callaway have combined tradition with technology in a timeless premium, forged iron to create the latest Apex 19 irons with a new multi-piece construction.

Callaway’s first stab at an Apex iron was successful, but the second generation Apex CF16 lit up the idea of combining the best performance technology with a forged body, which made it look and feel a million dollars.

Callaway’s R&D team told TG “we had to look pretty hard for feedback that was negative when it came to Apex. People always want to hit the ball further, so that was a given, so it seemed we had the green light to go for more ball speed, as long as we kept a lot of the valuable things about Apex right –  the timeless look, the precision, feel and the forging”.

So they set about adding more technology than the CF16 with the idea to create more ball speed and distance in a way that didn’t come with any control penalty.

“If you want to hit the ball far, you still want predictable distance, and that was our challenge with this iron” added head of R&D at Callaway, Alan Hocknell.

The majority of the mass is in the forged 1025 miled carbon steel body (used for extremely soft feel), which for the first time also uses their proprietary urethane microspheres, therby incorporating over over one million tiny air pockets that absorb unwanted vibration without slowing the face.

Their 360 Face Cup promotes high ball speeds across the face and achieves long, consistent distance in the long and mid irons. In the short irons, Callaway have implemented a new spin control VFT (Variable Face Thickness) Face for aggressive shot-making in your scoring clubs.

In addition, their MIM’D Tungsten Weighing helpes the brand precisely locate the CG position in each iron while maintaining the flexibility of the Face Cup for optimum launch and control.

pro 19

Callaway reckon the Apex Pro 19 Irons have the potential to redefine the category, having put all of their performance-enhancing tech into a forged tour players’ shaped iron for the first time.

It’s the first forged tour shaped iron to include a face cup, tungsten weight and urethane microspheres, with differences throughout the set in what each iron has.

“From an R&D point of view this iron is a big achievement, and something we’ve been trying to do for several years – putting all the performance-enhancing technology in our standard irons into a forged tour players’ shaped iron. We think is has the potential to redefine the category.”

“For the first time we have a face cup in a forged tour player iron, tungsten weight and the urethane microspheres, and we’re using all those techniques throughout the set to create performance that this type of player hasn’t had access to before.

“An iron like our X-Forged 18 was a single piece forged cavity back, iron and this is the absolute opposite. This is the future of how high-performance tour player irons will be made. The 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7-irons have the face cup and tungsten, but the 8, 9, PW and PW have a face plate rather than a face cup, and we’ve moved the tungsten weight higher in the head. Every head had a unique weight arrangement, which no-one else is doing in golf.

“There will also be a combo set, but we haven’t just smashed two sets together; we’ve tried to match them so there’s a true flow within the set, with the shaping and the loft gapping.”

Callaway Apex Hybrid

apex hybrid

Callaway’s most-played hybrid on tour now it has Jailbreak for the first time, providing the benefits of a hybrid while maintaining the spin characterstics and controlled ball flight of a long iron for better players and Tour Pros.

In a nutshell, players who gravitate to this model tend to have more clubhead speed, and don’t want the club to go left like the more forgiving hybrids. It also has a trajectory that’s more like an iron, with a flatter face, a flatter lie angle and a toe that’s higher than the heel.

Key Features

Controlled Ball Flight and Workability From Precision Shaping
The design appeals to better players and Tour Pros, and it transitions perfectly from
your irons. Apex 19 Hybrids provide a neutral bias for the controlled ball flight with
workability that better players want to see.

Fast Ball Speed From Jailbreak Technology
Two steel Jailbreak bars stiffen the body, placing more impact load on the face to promote fast ball speed and distance. The Forged Face Cup is made from Carpenter 455 Steel, and is designed for increased ball speed at every impact location.
