Play suspended

Play in the opening fourballs was thwarted by heavy rain and officials had no option but to halt proceedings.

This marks the first suspension of play in The Ryder Cup since 1997 at Valderrama.

The course had taken a severe battering from the elements and eventually the agonising decision to suspend play was taken and the bedraggled players, caddies and officials sought refuge in the warmth of the clubhouse.

It’s not yet known when the action will resume but clearly it hinges on when the rain ceases and how quickly the greenstaff can get the course, specially the greens and bunkers, playable again.

It’s a crying shame for everybody and clearly many peoples worst fears about staging a Ryder Cup in Wales at this time of the year appear to have been realised.

However, on the bright side the course drains well so hopefully it won’t be too long before the players are out again.

Europe had made a bright start and must have been disappointed about having to head off the course having forged ahead in three of the four matches.

“We got off to a very good start but hopefully we can maintain the momentum we built up when we return to the course,” said Lee Westwood, 2 up with Martin Kaymer against opening match opponents Phil Mickelson & Dustin Johnson.
