TG Blog: Dancing hips

Friday 21st January

“The calendar flicks another page and shows me that I am now in the fifth month of my challenge. Over the past two weeks I have only played one ‘real’ round of golf and one quick 18 to test my swing. The rest of the time it has been practice, practice, practice.

“We are on phase three of constructing my swing – really detailed stuff involving body movements that I’m not used to. I’ve never been much of a dancer – think embarrassing Uncle dancing at a wedding and then think outtake TV – so rotating my hips was pretty new to me.

“The latest idea of thrusting them sideways on the downswing is still slightly incomprehensible to my poor lost body. My brain gets it, but my body is still a little slow.

“This concentration on building a scratch standard swing means that my swing is not settled or ingrained yet, meaning that when I do get out on a course there’s a lot of scope for it to fall apart, which naturally affects my ability to shoot low scores.

“This will all change in the coming weeks when we finish the technical training and I get to play a lot more golf. As you read this I’m probably somewhere on Northampton Golf Course hunting a ball that went awry because my hips wouldn’t do what they were told.”

» My challenge is to go from complete novice to scratch standard in 12 months. You can follow progress at www.novice2scratch.com.
