Fantasy League: South African Open preview

With only three tournaments to go, things are really heating up in the Today’s Golfer Fantasy League, which changes continents this week for the South African Open.

A number of big names are playing the World Cup of Golf this week so the focus in South Africa is very much on maintaining European Tour status and making a final push for the top 60 who qualify for the season-ending Dubai World Championship.

There are a few standout players in the field but this week will also test your knowledge of the lower echelons of the European Tour.

The tournament is being held at Serengeti GC for the first time so past results aren’t so important.

TG’s six-man Fantasy League team for the South African Open is:

George Coetzee, $0.8m
The powerful South African is 25th in the Race to Dubai, with eight top 10s on the European Tour this season, including T3 last week. One of the favourites for a first win on home soil.

Simon Dyson, $1.2m
He’s the only player in the world’s top 50 teeing it up this week and will be hoping to show his class by claiming a third win of the year.

Ernie Els, $2.8m
The Big Easy has dropped out of the top 50 after a disappointing year but he’s still world class when his putter behaves. Don’t underestimate the impact of his reputation on other players in a field that includes many golfers who count Ernie as a hero.

Retief Goosen, $2.4m
He was one of the better International performers in last week’s Presidents Cup – finishing with three wins and two losses. It’s been an inconsistent seasib but he’s shown glimpses of his Major-winning form in a trio of T3 in world class fields.

Robert Rock, $1.0m
The Englishman has a very good record in South Africa. He finished T38 last week and hasn’t had a top 20 since his Italian Open win but a good start could give him the confidence needed to challenge.

Jaco Van Zyl, $0.9m
The straight-hitting South African has had very good rookie season – 52nd in the Race to Dubai – and has seven top 20s in his last nine starts, including a T3 last week.
