Lilly forges clear in British Par 3 Championship

SIMON Lilly finished with a flourish to open up a three-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Farmfoods British Par 3 at Solihull’s Nailcote Hall.
The Wellingborough ace carded a seven-under par 47, not dropping a shot throughout his inch-perfect round.
Five of his birdies came in his final eight holes, including an impressive back-to-back finish.
“It was just one of those days where I have played really nicely,” Lilly explained. “I played sensibly on the tough holes and attacked the others.
“I have been struggling with putting recently but it was really good today.
“It is a good springboard to tomorrow but there is still along way to go. It’s a tough course and there are plenty of good golfers taking part. Anything could happen.
“Because it is such a tough course you have to play sensibly and smart, getting aggressive when you can.
“It is a great event with a brilliant atmosphere. There are loads of families here and some excellent sponsorship from Farmfoods.”
European Tour favourite Gary Boyd also birdied his final two holes for a four-under par 50 and a share of second place.
But he would have been within a whisker of the overnight leader had he not double bogeyed the sixth.
Another European Tour regular David Russell also finished on four under with Hinckley Golf Club’s Mark Whittle a further two shots adrift.
Just one other golfer shot below par, former British Amateur champion Gary Wolstenholme MBE.
