Is this the world’s most spectacular hole?

  • 4,921 feet above sea level

  • You have to get a helicopter to the tee

  • £199 green fee buys you five shots at the green

Is this the world’s most spectacular hole? It’s perched on a New Zealand mountaintop and only accessible via helicopter, and even renowned course architect Tom Doak says it’s one of the best spots he has ever set foot on.

It sits 4,921 feet above sea level in New Zealand’s South Alps and plays 231 yards from the daily tees, 312 from the tips. The £199 green fee includes the chopper flight up there and five shots.

The idea developed from previous experiences offered by Over The Top – a helicopter tour specialist based in nearby Queenstown.

Boss Louisa Patterson, who came up with the idea, said: “In the 1960s, my father had one of those calendars which had photos of tees taken in famous landmarks around the world, like the Eiffel Tower. I remember thinking to myself, ‘wouldn’t it be amazing if we could do that here?’”
