Welcome to the UK’s longest golf hole

A devilish golf hole measuring 666 yards called ‘The Beast’ has been created at Hamptworth Golf and Country Club in Wiltshire. It is believed to be the only par 6 in the country. 

The mammoth hole was the idea of entrepreneur and golf enthusiast Carl Faulds, who recently purchased the course. Having secured the course, located between Southampton and Salisbury in the north of the New Forest, Faulds set about improving the course, including lengthening the 16th hole.

“Previously the hole was a 570-yard par 6 but, unlike many clubs, we had the space to take the tee back. We were able to extend it to 666 yards and we called it ‘The Beast’ for obvious reasons. It actually plays longer than 666 yards because it is hilly. We believe this is the only par 6 in the country, and it has certainly attracted a lot of interest.”

Short-hitters shouldn’t be too worried about teeing it up at Hamptworth. “There are still several different length tees should people prefer to play the old par 5,” adds Faulds. 

You’d be mad not to take on the challenge, though. Those who ‘Beat the Beast’ by making a net birdie – or better – will receive a certificate to mark their achievement.

‘The Beast’ takes over from Crondon Park’s 647-yard 18th hole as the UK’s longest. Although Crondon Park does have the space to put the tee back over 200 yards, making it an 860-yard monster for special occasions. 

They both pale in comparison alongside the world’s longest hole, the 1,097-yard par 7 at Gunsan Country Club in South Korea. That’s nearly two thirds of a mile, and there’s water all down the left, making it one of the few holes in the world where we wouldn’t be too upset to walk off with a nine.
