Jordan Speith and Rory McIlroy best backed players for Open glory

Colin Montgomerie has also been heavily backed for a fairytale win.

Jordan Speith and Rory McIlroy have been the best backed players to win the 145th Open Championship although it is Colin Montgomerie who is the worst result for the bookies.

He is 150/1 with William Hill to win the Open and while he has not attracted huge sums of money, he has attracted more than a few romantic pounds.

“Monty is not thought to have a huge chance of winning however it is his home course and perhaps the last time he will play there in the Open,” said William hill spokesman Joe Crilly.

“In a year full of sporting fairy tales, our punters are backing another one to take place this weekend.”
