The 12 players USA captain Zach Johnson will be hoping can secure Ryder Cup victory in Rome.

The 44th Ryder Cup takes place in Rome from 29 September – 1 October 2023, the first time the event has ever been held in Italy.

USA captain Zach Johnson will be hoping his 12 charges can build on a dominant victory in 2021 at Whistling Straits, with the Americans emerging 19-9 winners in a match delayed one year due to COVID.

But, if they are to win in Rome, the Americans will have to secure a first ‘away’ victory against Team Europe since The Belfry in 1993.

The World No. 1 is frighteningly good tee-to-green and tops every relevant strokes-gained statistic. His putting is his only weakness, and he was something of a matchplay specialist prior to his four losses at the Presidents Cup. On his Ryder Cup debut, he was undefeated in three matches. He’s also been a winner, runner-up and semi-finalist in the WGC-Match Play.

The joint top-scorer for the American team in 2021, Cantlay also boasts six wins from nine matches at the Presidents Cup. That’s a formidable record and while some of his team-mates find him slow, he’s linked well with his good friend Xander Schauffele. Together they’ve won six of nine matches across Ryder and Presidents Cups.

A solid matchplay performer, he also owns a sneaky victory in Italy, secured 10 years ago on the Challenge Tour.

It would have been outrageous to suggest he might make his debut at the end of last year, yet Clark has been sensational in 2023. A PGA Tour breakthrough at the Quail Hollow Championship in May was followed by a US Open triumph in June. Captain Zach Johnson will be excited about his ability to stay cool under the most intense pressure.

His form in 2023 has been boom or bust, with plenty of top 10s but a lot of missed cuts.

The king of social media has had one eye on Rome ever since he won the first event after last year’s Ryder Cup. He passed his audition at the Presidents Cup, where he won two foursomes with Tony Finau, a fourball with Billy Horschel, then beat Tom Kim in the singles. In a minor triumph of 2023, he landed a first top-10 in a Major at The Open.

The pint-sized left-hander knows what it takes to perform in front of a crowd that doesn’t want you to win, after thrashing the field by six strokes at The Open. He insists he enjoys matchplay and the numbers back him up. He won five points from seven matches in the 2005 and 2009 Walker Cups.

A riddle because Burns has won five times on the PGA Tour in three years but has continued to play dreadfully in the Majors. In 14 starts, his best finish is 20th. A win at the WGC-Match Play in March was big and much needed after his Presidents Cup debut, where he was paired with Scottie Scheffler on three occasions and lost every match.
