Augusta National Invitational

The first Masters was held on March 22, 1934 and officially called the Augusta National Invitational. Many decisions made for this first Masters remain today, including the four days of 18 holes strokeplay each day instead of the then customary 36 holes on the third day, eliminating qualifying rounds and denying permission for anyone except the player and caddie to be in the playing area. The title was won by Horton Smith by a shot from Craig Wood after rounds of 70-72-70-72 for a -4 total.
