Exclusive | Lyle would consider being Monty’s Vice Captain

Sandy Lyle exclusively revealed to TG Courses Editor Kevin Brown that he would consider the role of Vice Captain to Colin Montgomerie at the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Lyle was overlooked for the main job again and he now appears to have resigned himself to the fact that he’ll never captain Europe.

Scot Lyle, a former Masters and Open champion, was clearly disappointed about missing out again but probably not too surprised.

He believes Monty will prove an excellent captain and would love to assist him at Celtic Manor in South Wales next year. He confirmed: “To be honest my chances of being captain now are pretty slim, though I’d love to play a supporting role to Monty if asked.

“Monty is a good team guy, he’s easy to talk to, is very excitable and well educated and I reckon he’ll make some good decisions.

“I would have loved to have been captain myself but that’s about it for me now. In a few years time I’ll be pottering around on the seniors tour and probably won’t be interested in doing it then.

“But you never know – I’ll keep the door ajar just in case for Gleneagles in 2014 but I just felt this was the best opportunity for me in terms of time and age-wise. However, the main thing is to bring back that cup!”
