McDowell sports personality

Today, Golf World launches a campaign to make Graeme McDowell the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year 2010.

A shortlist of candidates will be revealed by the BBC in the next few weeks, and the US Open Champion and Ryder Cup hero is certain to be on there.

He will face stiff competition from other British athletes like diver Tom Daley, jockey AP McCoy and several track and field stars.

But given his incredible season, which has also seen him win two other tournaments, McDowell surely deserves the accolade.

Golf World Editor Chris Jones said: “Graeme deserves this award more than anyone. The US Open was special, where he became the first European in 40 years to win the title. But the Ryder Cup was just even more epic; his three shots on the 16th hole to get a crucial birdie against Hunter Mahan in the singles was golf from the very, very top drawer.”

With Europe winning the Ryder Cup in one of the great sporting moments of the year, the debate over who will win this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award has been blown wide open once again.

This year’s show will be held at LG Arena in Birmingham on December 19.
