Luke Donald misses out

Luke Donald narrowly missed out on going to the top of the world rankings when he lost in a play-off at the weekend.

Donald is on a hot run of forma nd looked to have added to his tally of three wins on the PGA Tour as his main rival Jim Furyk fell apart on the final day of The Heritage tournament, at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina.

But Brandt Snedeker crept up on the blind side and ended with a stunning 64. The young Americanhad to hang around for about two hours in the clubhouse as the leaders finished thier round.

Donal found the going tough but managed to card a 70 and go into a playoff.

The pair traded blows over the first twom goles, but Donald found the bunker at the third. HIs shot out of the sand ran away and he faced a tough chip back to the hole. He hit it sublimely and it looked for a moment that he’d holed it to carry on the playoff.

But he had hit it too hard and it caught the edge of the hole and bounced out. Snedeker’s par was enough to claim the win.

Donald said: “It was tough out there – not easy at all. Hats off to Brandt though, he played great.

“There are a lof of people who have the chance to be world number one right now. It’s a fun time. Being world number one is not everything but it would certainly be a tick in the box – something to tell the grandkids.

“But I still have a lot of chances to do that. I will now move forward to next week.”

Lee Westwood actually took over at the top of the rankings again with a win in Indonesia. Donald stays at world number three while Martin Kaymer drops to second.
