torrance hits back at masters axe

Sam Torrance has been dropped from next week’s Masters by the BBC – and withdrawn his servies for the Open in July.

The former Ryder Cup captain won’t be joining Peter Alliss and Ken Brown at Augusta National, saying: “I thought I was becoming a fixture. They said ‘look Sam, we have two days live and two days recording… we just can’t afford to take you.”

“Because the only other event I do for them, with no Ryder Cup this year, is the Open, I had to pull out of that too.”

As well as Alliss and Brown, Hazel Irvine will present the BBC coverage from Augusta, with Andrew Cotter reporting from the course. For the first time, Sky will show all four rounds live. The BBC will only show the weekend live, and highlights from Thursday and Friday.

Sky refused to comment on reports that it has already had preliminary talks with Torrance to join the line-up of Butch Harmon, Ewen Murray and Bruce Critchley.
