Franc wins Ryder Cup

France has been named as the Ryder Cup venue for 2018 for the first time ever.

Le Golf National in Versailles, near Paris, will host the presitgious tournament that sees Europe’s best players take on the might of the Americans.

Five nations had been in the running and Spain was mentioned as a last-gasp favourite as the death of Seve Ballesteros prompted a wave of emotion.

But the classy French venue was always the front runner and when the announcmenet was made today at Wentwroth in Surrey, there was general acceptance that the best bid had won through.

Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup Director, said: “We would like to congratulate France for becoming the host for 2018. France gave us the confidence to believe that they will host a truly memorable Ryder Cuo in seven years time. However, there are four impressive silver medallists involved in this extremely detailed process – Germany, Holland, Portugal and Spain.”

Le Golf National is a top-quality stadium course which is due to host the Alstom Open de France – a European Tour event – next month.
