Fantasy Golf: Deutsche Bank Championship preview

The Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game, in association with Your Golf Travel, is staying on the PGA Tour this week as the FedEx Cup Play-offs enter their second week at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

The par-71 TPC Boston has traditionally been the easiest course of the four play-off events, although Plainfield CC (host of last year’s Barclays) had a lower scoring average in 2011.

It’s not overly long at 7,214 yards and has ranked among the easiest courses on the PGA Tour in recent years for fairways hit and scrambling. It’s likely to be a shoot-out so greens in regulation, putting and birdie average are important factors.

The only notable change from last year is on the par-5 18th, where the green has been moved slightly to the right and made smaller, with tightly-mown run-off areas.

The top 100 players in the FedEx Cup standings have advanced to this week and that will be cut to 70 for next week’s BMW Championship, also in the TG Fantasy Golf game. The tournament starts on Friday so it can finish on Monday, which is Labor Day in America.

Here is TG’s six-man team for the Deutsche Bank Championship:

Luke Donald, $5.5m
The world number two has three top-10s in his last four starts, including a T10 at The Barclays. He’s finished T2 and T3 here the last two years with a scoring average of 67.25.

Steve Stricker, $3.8m
They don’t call him Mr September for nothing. Stricker usually peaks at this time of year and won the Deutsche Bank in 2009. He has three top-sevens in his last five starts and ranks 15th on Tour in birdie average and 22nd in GIR.

Tim Clark, $2.0m
The South African made it four consecutive top 15s with a T10 at The Barclays. He led the field in putting at Bethpage last week and is fourth on Tour in driving accuracy.

Brandt Snedeker, $1.2m
The Barclays runner-up leads the Tour in strokes gained – putting and sits 6th in birdie average. He’s finished T5 and T3 at TPC Boston the last two years.

Bud Cauley, $1.2m
The 22-year-old is on a fine run of 4-T4-MC-3-T10 finishes. He’s never played the Deutsche Bank before but 10th in total birdies and 37th in greens in regulation.

Graham DeLaet, $0.5m
The Canadian sealed his place in this week’s field with a closing 65 to finish T5. His form had been solid before that and his 13th ranking in total driving and 32nd in GIR should stand him in good stead this week.
