Fantasy Golf: The Players Championship preview

The Players Championship offers double points this week in the Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game, in association with Your Golf Travel.

The PGA Tour’s flagship event is known as ‘the fifth Major’ and it’s attracted a suitably world class field again this.

TPC Sawgrass has played a little easier than usual in the last two years, but it’s still a very difficult course to scramble around so accurate iron players have a definite advantage.

Course management and experience has also proved vital in the past. Since Fred Funk emerged in his 15th appearance in 2005, the average number of starts of the seven champions is 9.57.

Here is the six-man Today’s Golfer team for The Players Championship:

Rory McIlroy, $5.0m
He returned to the top of the world as he continued his blistering form with a runners-up finish at Quail Hollow last week. He ranks 20th in GIR and 1st in the all-around ranking on the PGA Tour.

Adam Scott, $3.4m
The Aussie has quietly notched top 20 finishes in all four of his strokeplay starts this year. He’s known as one of the best ball strikers on the planet so TPC Sawgrass should be a good fit for him.

Matt Kuchar, $3.0m
He hasn’t won since The Barclays in 2010 but he remains one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour. He has three top 20s in eight starts here.

Ryan Moore, $1.6m
A fifth place finish last week was a third top 10 in his last four starts. He hasn’t missed a cut in five appearances at TPC Sawgrass.

Brian Davis, $1.0m
The Englishman has split three top 26 finishes with three missed cuts at the last six Players Championships but he comes in this week off the back of four top 13s in his last five events.

Chris Stroud, $0.8m
The American could offer great value for money this week. He’s finished 10th and 12th here the last two years and already has five top 15s to his name this season.
