Can Lee Westwood land his first major title?

Lee Westwood is looking to continue this sizzling summer of British sporting success following the triumphs of Justin Rose (US Open) and new Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.

‘Westy’ shot a superb 2nd round 68 to put himself -2 for the championship and well in the hunt for that elusive first major title.

“There’s definitely a feel-good factor in Britain. But golf is such an individual game and I’m just concentrating on what I’ve got going on at the moment.

“I felt if I came out and shot level par, I thought 1-over would be right in contention. To be 2-under is a real bonus – it could be leading at the end of the day, you never know.”

Of course Westy has been here before in majors but failed to get over the finishing line so he’s taking nothing for granted. However, this could well be his week, specially if he can continue to putt as well as he has on the past two days.

He revealed:” I got a couple of tips on getting tension out of my arms and having a bit more control. I’m getting it on line nicely, and I’ve gauged the pace of the greens as well.

“Mind you, we had an advantage playing this morning. I’ll kick back this afternoon on the couch and watch some struggles… and the Ashes cricket!

But Westwood knows he’s only halfway there so he’s not yet thinking of holding aloft the precious Claret Jug though he would dearly loved to.

He confirmed:” I love playing the Open Championship. This is the biggest tournament of the year for me being a Brit, and it being played in Britain. And why not enjoy it out there? It’s tough for everybody so you’ve got to smile your way through.”
