Lefty’s win hits bookies to the tune of £8m

Phil Mickelson was heavily backed ante-post where he teed off at Muirfield as a 25/1 shot, and along with his final round 66 it has cost Ladbrokes just over £8 million in payouts to winning punters.

Mickelson also touched 20/1 during in-play betting at the start of Sunday’s play.

And after Lee Westwood’s latest major setback the firm now make him odds-on at 2/7 to never win a Major during his career. However, for the optimists out there it’s a 5/2 chance he finally gets his hands on at least one.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “Mickelson’s win has hit us hard but in hindsight it seemed inevitable that the Westwood choke would make an appearance.

“We think this was Westy’s best ever hope for a Major but the odds now firmly suggest he’ll never get his hands on one.

“Patriotic punters have never had it so good thanks to the exciting summer of sport we’re having, they keep reinvesting their winnings but we’re just giving it straight back to them. We’re left wondering when the Brits will start being average again.”
