Fantasy Golf: Dunhill Links Championship preview

After an exciting conclusion to the FedEx Cup, the Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game now switches focus to the closing weeks of the European Tour season; starting with this week’s Dunhill Links Championship, on the east coast of Scotland.

The tournament is played over three fabulous links courses – St Andrews Old, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns – with the cut falling after three rounds, when the players have played each course once. Those who make the cut return to the Old Course on Sunday.

The weather forecast is pretty good for the end of the week and weekend but it will still suit players who enjoy links conditions and the wind.

The pro-am element adds an extra dimension to the tournament as each player is paired with a celebrity, business leader or invitee.

Here is TG’s six-man team for the Dunhill Links Championship:

Martin Kaymer, £2.5m
The former world number one has six top-10s to his name this year but has still slipped to 42nd in the world rankings. He won here in 2010 and has also finished 15-2-30-34 in his other four appearances.

Richard Sterne, £1.6m
He hasn’t played a great deal in recent weeks but has been on good form all season. He added a T13 in his last start at the European Masters to a win, two runners-up finishes and five other top-20s in 2013.

Simon Dyson, £1.4m
The 2009 Dunhill Links champion loves links golf and has also finished 5th, 8th and 9th in this event. Three top-10s, two top-20s and no missed cuts in his last eight tournaments.

Stephen Gallacher, £1.4m
The Scotsman has two top-10s in his last three stars and finished T5 here last year. He has a very creditable scoring average of 70.27 from 15 rounds in this event.

Ross Fisher, £1.3m
The four-time European Tour winner has finished T3 and T5 in his last two starts and has a 2nd and 11th to his name at the Dunhill Links.

Brett Rumford, £0.7m
After winning twice earlier in the year, the Aussie has hit another purple patch with T6-T8-T15 finishes in his last three events. Three top-22 finishes here in his last five appearances.
