Fisher hooks Africa Open title

Trever Fisher Jnr’s success maintained South Africa’s stunning record of providing every winner of the Africa Open since its inception in 2010.

Fisher finished in a tie for fourth in that first event five yars ago but he made no mistakes at East London GC where he triumphed by five shots from Englishman Matt Ford.

An eight-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, the 35 year old’s maiden European Tour title arrived courtesy of a final round eight under par 64.

The South African admitted: “It is always nerve-racking leading – I was nervous the last few holes, I think that is natural – not to think about the result. But it’s quite hard and I think I did a good job.

“I played well and everything went well. The putter was amazing, I sank some amazing putts today. It is written in the stars.”

Nevertheless it was still a gritty effort from England duo Ford (-14) and fellow countryman John Parry (-14) who finished a creditable tied 6th.
