Lefty Phil Mickelson lording it up at The Open

It’s early doors but already can anybody catch ‘Lefty?’

With The Open reaching its halfway point, 2013 champion Phil Mickelson was setting a scorching pace and seemingly in a class of his own, threatening to leave his rivals trailing in his wake.

Mickelson, who yesterday missed shooting the best round in Open history, was in similarly devastating form in the 2nd round and at one stage had forged five shots clear.

However, he finally came unstuck and dropped his first shot of the championship on the 12th showing he is human after all while giving hope to the rest of the field.

The chasing pack were being led by plucky Dane Soren Kjeldsen, who has proved he can produce the goods in the most trying elements and conditions, and defending champion Zach Johnson who has proved he can deliver on the biggest stage of them all.

Mickelson’s flying start has certainly turned up the heat on his rivals and put the pressure on the rest including the likes of Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia (both -3) who will be looking to build on their bright openings.

But there’s still a long way to go and while Lefty is a brilliant player, he’s often an erratic and an unpredictable one. Quite clearly anything can happen yet…and probably will.
